The Nelson Monument is located on top of Calton Hill in the lovely city of Edinburgh, Scotland. It is dedicated to the memory of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson and his victory over the French and Spanish fleets. He died in 1805 at the Battle of Trafalgar during the Napoleonic wars. The monument was built in 1807 and took nine years to complete. The monument is designed to look like a telescope turned upside down, something that Nelson would have used as a navy man. The Royal Navy’s white ensign and signal flags hang from it on Trafalgar day. There is also a time ball on top of a mast that is raised just before 1:00 pm and dropped at exactly 1:00 pm. It has lovely views of the city.

The Nelson Monument, standing proudly atop Calton Hill in Edinburgh, is a striking tribute to Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson and his victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Completed in 1816, this 32-metre-high stone tower serves as both a memorial and a practical timepiece, offering visitors a glimpse into Scotland's maritime and historical past. Designed by architect Robert Burn, the monument’s unique shape resembles an upturned telescope, a nod to Nelson's naval legacy. What sets it apart is the addition of a time ball in 1852, which drops daily at 1:00 pm. Originally intended to help ships in Leith Harbour synchronise their timepieces, this tradition continues to this day, a fascinating link to the city’s nautical history. Climbing the spiral staircase to the top of the monument rewards you with breathtaking 360-degree views of Edinburgh. From the dramatic Arthur’s Seat to the historic Edinburgh Castle and the shimmering Firth of Forth, the panorama is simply unforgettable. The Nelson Monument is not only a historic treasure but also a prime spot for photographers, history buffs, and those seeking an unparalleled perspective of the city. It’s a must-visit for anyone exploring Edinburgh’s rich tapestry of landmarks and stories.

Het is een stevige wandeling naar boven maar dat is het meer dan waard. Buiten de prachtige architectuur die zich daar bevind heb je een adembenemend uitzicht over Edinburgh

Night time in monuments. Must visit. We just visited in winter but locals say it is also so good in summer evenings.

Loved the history this place holds. Learned loads of new information, and the view from the small but long spiral staircase was beautiful. Small fee to enter, but it's amazing to walk around and up to the top. However, it's very narrow and steep but does have a full railing to hold onto if needed.

The Nelson Monument is the highest place of elevation on Calton Hill you can get to. You have a near panoramic view of the hill and Edinburgh. It is also the only place with a cost to visit (£6 to go to the top). We had limited time, but I wish I could have gone to the top. I can only imagine the view from that height.

The Nelson Monument is a commemorative tower in honour of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson. It is situated on top of Calton Hill. Horatio Nelson was awarded the Chelengk, the highest military decoration of the Ottoman Empire, by Sultan Selim III following his victory at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. This distinguished jeweled honor became one of England's most iconic symbols of naval heroism.

I love the Nelson monument! You can't really buy the ticket in advance just get there and pay at the entrance. Make sure you get there at least 30 minutes before the break or last entry because it can be a bit of a wait if there are many people visiting. The view from the top is fantastic with 360 degrees around the monument! I especially love that you can see the clear top of the Author's seat and Holyrood park hill top! The museum on the bottom floor is very interesting as well. There is a bathroom for customers on site. Very friendly and professional staff at the entrance and on the top of the monument! Definitely recommend for a viewing spot of Edinburgh city.
